Proto Pipe Classic

The original brass pipe we all know and love, our Proto Pipe® Classic or “Deluxe” was designed by Phil Jergenson in the late 60’s. It features a permanent screen, a swiveling lid, a Poker, a Stash Pod, and a Tar Trap. Ask any old head about this pipe and you’re sure to get a story!

High Maintenance
Proto Pipe classic fell short in many categories for my expectations. As a frequent cannabis user, I had "high" expectations that were never met. It is a harsh toke and the pipe clogs easily and frequently. It requires constant cleaning which is a disgusting activity. Far more gross than cleaning a water pipe. Cleaning the proto pipe requires gloves, pipe cleaners and other things that you will need to buy separately. Residue makes the poker stick. Pliers are then required to force the stuck poker out. You have to remove poker in order to clean the tar trap out from the bottom. The tar trap becomes stuck from residue as well. The only thing I liked about the proto pipe was the material (brass). The design of the pipes bowl itself seemed to waste flower, as the top of the bowl would become ash but the bottom was still greens.

The good and the bad
Super glad I bought this. Absolutely clutch as an active toker; perfect for those outdoor adventures and an instant classic. Great at concerts, hiking, on the river, at the beach, you name it. But, it’s not all roses and there’s a few disappointments. First, I am a very careful person. That poker was gone in about 6 months time. Dunno when or where but it must have just flown right off. It did not (or at least mine didn’t) sit very firmly in its little mechanism and was quite loose. Without it, I can’t get the tar trap off and that’s a disappointment also. Finally, my lid bolt is loose as fuck and if I tighten it - it’s loose as hell again swinging all over by the next day. Also a major bummer bc closing that lid is part of what makes it so clutch for the adventurer. Would I buy it again? Absolutely. Am I extremely disappointed by some of the weak points I mentioned. Totally. But that’s life I guess. YMMV!

33yrs and still going!
Bought mine around 1992. I’ve never polished it, just gentle cleanings to get the beautiful patina it finally has today. Of all the pipes I’ve picked up over the decades, I always go back to my favorite, The ProtoPipe. My partner bought one of the last ones before production stopped about 15yrs ago. She immediately had to toss it out the window at a Texas border checkpoint, full storage pod, never even used! It was devastating. We had no interest in the cheap knock-offs on eBay. I can’t WAIT to tell her you’re back!

Best pipe ever!!
I purchased a Proto Pipe in 1992 and recently lost it during a move; however, it was the best pipe I've ever owned and was still in excellent condition after 31 years of service! I miss my dear Proto, she was a welcome companion to me while I worked as a nationally touring stand-up comedian and I was always given great compliments whenever I pulled it out to share a burn session with another fellow comic or guest after my shows. I have nothing but absolute praise for such an enduring piece of everyday equipment...take good care of it, and it'll take great care of you just the same. Kudos to the inventor, and the company...cheers!

Been a user for decades. Have two pipes. Clean with pipe cleaner & alcohol & napkin. Gets pretty grungy if cleaning not kept up. Best pipes I've ever used!! Perfect one hitter bowl.

Thanks Jim
My neighbor Jim gave me his Proto Pipe back late 70's. Jim had been a camera man on the Wizard of Oz movie in the 30's. Quite the character. I still have his pipe. Thanks Jim.

41 good, long years
My mother bought an original proto back in 1982 when she and my father first started dating, and that piece has lasted until yesterday, 6/12/2023, when the mouthpiece finally gave out at the body of the pipe. However, it would still be easily repairable with just a replacement mouthpiece. This is the kind of quality that ProtoPipe produces.
