These days, “organic” is slapped on top of flower that still goes through a ton of processing.

But what about weed that grows in the wild, untouched by humans, thus, unbothered?

Wild weed is real and there are a few different climates where weed can grow naturally. These climates are all around the world, which explains why cannabis has been used for generations in many different religions and cultures as a medicine or to sharpen one’s spiritual senses.

And while the industry is a mega superstar today, with thousands of cultivation sites growing their own marijuana, Mother Nature is still the OG master grower.

Without further ado, let’s answer the burning question as to where does marijuana grow naturally.

Perhaps the true home of classic cannabis is the Hindu Kush Mountain Range, which travels through countries like Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Tajikistan. The dry and desert-like mountain range offers an ideal climate for wild cannabis flowers to pop up all over.

The only challenge is finding them. Because cannabis plants need a certain amount of water, shade, and sunlight, most wild plants in the mountain range can only be found near sources of water in rocky and jagged corners.

Asia has some of the best climates for growing wild cannabis. From Pakistan to China, the temperate to dry climates often grow different strains and plant types. In fact, a 2013 report on “Cannabis: Evolution and Ethnobotany” notes that some streets in Kunming, China, actually keep naturally–grown cannabis for decor. But in terms of other wildly grown plants, they’re often pretty strong and can withstand the heat, dryness, or changing temperatures within these climates.

In Morocco, Malawi, South Africa, Lesotho, and Zambia, chances are you’ll come across a wild cannabis plant or two. Even though these regions are rather dry and hot, they’re also incredibly windy, making it easier for pollination and seeds to spread across the region. But, because the temperatures are constantly fluctuating throughout the day and into the evening, wild marijuana must adapt to these changes in order to survive.

It’s not impossible to find wild marijuana in North America, especially out west in British Columbia, Oregon, and California. But we hate to tell you that weed did not originate here, so those wild plants you might see are referred to as “ditch weed.” Yes, it can grow in a ditch, but the term refers to someone who brought cannabis seeds to North America and decided to ditch them. Thus, wild cannabis plants in our continent were born.

There are many places that can have the right conditions to grow cannabis naturally.

From the Hindu Kush Mountains, all the way to African countries like Morocco, weed grows naturally everywhere.
