There’s always a market for aesthetically pleasing smoking products, especially those with a modern and minimalist appeal. What’s more minimal than a piece of bamboo? Not much, so we’ve decided to give you the inside scoop on how to save some cash and make your very own luxury bamboo pipe.

Well, a pipe made of bamboo. Bamboo is incredibly durable is surprisingly stronger under tension than steel. It’s also made of about 70% silica, the same element found in borosilicate glass, and for experienced stoners, you know this is the glass that the best bongs and pipes are made of.

The best thing about these pipes is that they’re incredibly easy to use and don’t need a whole lot of materials.

These bamboo pipes are as straightforward as it gets. Make sure you have a small mesh screen handy, so you don’t catch any Scoobie snacks, cover the carb, place your bowl piece in the hole, and inhale.

Cleaning it is a little more difficult. Because the pipe is lined with beeswax in its interior, make sure you never use hot water when cleaning it. Instead, drop the pipe in a large ziplock bag with isopropyl alcohol and one cup of uncooked rice, then shake the bag back and forth until it’s clean. Rinse off the excess with cold water.

Now that you’re ready to clean and care for it, here’s our step-by-step guide to creating one of the best pipes you’ll ever own.

Materials:

• Cured bamboo, about 1.5″ -2″ in diameter and to your desired length
• Small screen to fit inside bamboo
• Drill
• Small drill bit
• Bowl piece
• Wood saw
• Beeswax
• Toothpick
• Rough Grit Sandpaper

Cut The Bamboo: Bamboo pieces come with nodes every few inches, almost like knuckles on our fingers. To start off, you’ll want to figure out the desired length for your pipe, which is typically around 7-8 inches, but be as bold and adventurous as you please! It just might make the process a little longer.

Carefully and slowly saw the bamboo to your desired length. If there are remaining node walls that prevent the bamboo from being hallowed, drill these pieces out in a circular motion.

Drill Bowl Piece Hole & Carb: Locate where you want your bowl piece to sit in the pipe, usually a few fingers away from one end. Carefully and slowly (bamboo is known to break during this process), drill a small hole for the bowl piece. Make sure you don’t drill the hole too big; you want the bowl piece to sit tightly for a proper pull.

Underneath that, on the other side of the bamboo, drill an even smaller hole for the carb (which you’ll cover with your finger/thumb when inhaling).

Sand And Clean: To make sure your pipe is of the highest quality, sand down and refine each edge, hole, and side of the bamboo, even the inside. This will give a smooth and delicate texture.

To clean the excess dust, blow as much of you can out of the middle and rinse off with water. Let the bamboo sit to dry completely.

Coat The Pipe With Wax: This part is pretty messy, so head outside to a flat or concrete surface. Heat up your beeswax on the stove and slowly pour it into the pipe. Next, roll the pipe until the inside is covered in wax completely (use a toothpick to ensure cavity holes are kept open), and let it sit for a couple of hours.

Once dry, place your screen inside; you’ll want to cut it down until it’s small enough to tightly sit in the pipe. Spark up, and enjoy!
