The new partnership aims to provide inmates with potentially transformative resources.
Vic Mensa is a man for the people. Not only did he launch Chicago’s first black-owned weed brand, 93 Boyz, but Mensa used funds from 93 Boyz to fill the gas tanks of over 200 cars at a gas station in the Southside of Chicago. Check it out here.
It looks like the Chicago-hailing rapper isn’t done yet. 93 Boyz recently announced the launch of a non-profit organization called Books Before Bars, dedicated to providing underserved prisons and inmates with books.
Vic Mensa’s pioneering cannabis brand, 93 Boyz, has taken a giant step towards empowering incarcerated individuals. The books provided are meant to offer inmates a pathway to personal growth through transformative resources they didn’t have access to before.
Books Before Bars was launched to address the lack of access to literature in prison libraries. The organization’s mission is to provide inmates with a comprehensive selection of influential books that inspire:
Books Before Bars hopes that inmates will find value and liberation with these books, potentially embarking on a journey of self-discovery throughout incarceration. Here’s a list of some of the books offered at Books Before Bars:
The list goes on. In order to make this a reality, Books Before Bars is receiving funds from Vic Mensa’s pioneering cannabis brand, 93 Boyz. While Books Before Bars is the latest philanthropic move from Vic Mensa, it’s not the first.
Mensa also launched SaveMoneySaveLife, in partnership with 93 Boyz, which is a Chicago-based, Native, and Black-led non-profit organization rallying for sustainable change, like prison reform and equity in cannabis. Furthermore, 93 Boyz has also partnered with the largest aeroponic cannabis cultivator worldwide, Aeriz, specializing in sustainable and eco-friendly processes.
It’s clear that at the heart of 93 Boyz is a mission to transform lives and opportunities by reinvesting in communities that have been disproportionately affected for far too long. Now, 93 Boyz is reinvesting in resources at Illinois prisons to ensure everyone has a chance to win.
Mensa stated in a press release:
“The goal of Books Before Bars is to bring liberation and freedom to people who are incarcerated through literature because I believe strongly that when you change your inner reality, you begin to influence your external reality.”
