List of Job Types In The Marijuana Industry & Descriptions

Do any of the five jobs below spark your interest?

Did you know that the cannabis industry has more employees than hairstylists, barbers, and cosmetologists combined? There are constantly new job openings in the marijuana space, especially in weed-friendly states and countries. Below, we’ve tied in a few of the most popular jobs in the industry and their accompanying descriptions.

Cannabis Trimmer

For your first-ever job in the cannabis industry, we suggest entry-level positions like a cannabis trimmer. This job is everything but mundane; it’s required to achieve proper quality, potency, and presentation. This job calls for carefully and precisely trimming loose leaves off growing cannabis plants, sorting the strains, weighing each plant, and drying them for packaging. It’s ideal to have some sort of experience with horticulture or gardening before applying.

Cannabis Cultivator

This job is a step up from cannabis trimming and definitely requires a background in horticulture. Entry-level positions like junior cultivators will mirror master growers and learn their way around tending to plants and caring for a farm/grow facility. You will often do routine checkups on crops to ensure a successful harvest, and when it’s time, you’ll carefully harvest the plants for packaging.

Edibles Chef

For anyone with knowledge in culinary or confections, there’s quite the need for edible chefs within companies that produce chocolate bars, gummies, brownies, and all sorts of edibles. An edibles chef will need to have a sharp eye for detail while creating and developing products for eventual sale. You’ll be working closely with cannabis extracts and oils and will infuse them into whichever products the company sells.

Cannabis Delivery

This is another entry-level job that’s in high demand, especially with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. More individuals than ever are choosing to stay home and get cannabis delivered to them, meaning any kind of delivery person, like a driver or cyclist, is needed. You will be paid an hourly wage, and some dispensaries even offer commission. (Psst, the tips are a GREAT bonus).

Budtender

One of the industry‘s best and most prideful jobs is a budtender position. This takes place at a dispensary and requires you to know your way around various cannabis products, plant varieties, and their effects. Consumers will come in and ask your opinion on which product is best for their specific needs, meaning you must be confident in your decisions and make proper recommendations for recreational users and medical patients.
