Growers, Are You Bud Washing? Here’s How To Wash Weed Properly

We wash our produce even when it's grown in the backyard. Is the cannabis plant any different?

Washing weed might seem like a stupid idea. Isn’t that just creating a breeding ground for mold?

Also, doesn’t soaked weed lose potency and ruin the cannabinoid and terpene content? We’re happy to tell you this is far from the truth, only if you follow the right cleaning process.

Keep reading for more information on how to wash cannabis buds properly, which is an essential part of the cultivation process.

Why Is Washed Weed A Thing

Whether you shop for vegetables at the grocery store or grow them in your backyard, you always wash your produce.

This is because plants like vegetables (and cannabis) can interact with different pollutants like insects, pesticides, soil, living microorganisms, pollen, and so much more that we can’t see with the naked eye.

When it comes to weed plants, these unwanted particles and organisms can directly impact the potency, flavor, and effects of your buds. And don’t think you’re in the clear because you’re growing weed indoors; pollutants are still roaming the greenhouse without your knowledge.

Also, if you’re afraid that washing your weed will ruin it, here are some informative tips to give you peace of mind;

  • Cannabinoids like THC and CBD are fat-soluble, meaning they will not break down or lose potency when in contact with water.
  • Your precious aromatic terpenes will not lose flavor or scent if washed and dried correctly.

Now that you know why it’s essential, keep reading for the rundown on how to properly clean your weed.

Washing Buds In Peroxide And Baking Soda - A Strong Bud Wash Recipe

There are numerous methods for crafting a cannabis plant wash, but the recipe we’ve found strikes the perfect balance. It effectively cleans the buds without altering their essential characteristics, like taste or effects.

Here is the list of items and ingredients you’ll need to wash your buds after harvest:

  • Two Large Buckets
  • Baking Soda (14 cups)
  • Lemon Juice (14 cups)
  • Hydrogen Peroxide (1/2 cup)
  • Reverse Osmosis Water (preferably)

Follow the steps below for how to wash buds:

  • Place two large buckets side-by-side. Fill both buckets with 4 gallons of reverse osmosis water.
  • In your first bucket, add the baking soda, lemon juice, and hydrogen peroxide. Mix well for 1 minute. Leave the second bucket alone with reverse osmosis water only.
  • Take a branch of buds and dip them into the first bucket with the mixed solution. Swirl for 30 seconds.
  • Next, place the branch into the second bucket and swirl for another 30 seconds.
  • Now that your buds are wet and clean, you have a couple of options for drying them. If you have a herb dryer, that’s ideal.
  • If not, you can do what other cultivators do and hang dry the branches upside down in a room that’s well-ventilated. Ventilation is key to ensure your buds don’t grow mold.
  • Once the buds are completely dry and feel back to normal, they’re ready for a spark!
