Does CBD Oil Expire?

Let's see if your CBD tincture is still effective.

How long have you had your CBD oil? Whether it’s brand new or a year old, we’ll help you figure out if it’s still effective.

There are a few ways to tell if CBD has degraded and if an oil has gone bad, which we’ve included below. The best possible way to ensure your CBD oil stands the test of time without losing potency is by storing it in ideal conditions.

Below, we’ve answered your frequently asked questions about CBD oil and how long it can last. Read on for your answers.

Does CBD Oil Expire?

Like most other consumable cannabis products, CBD oil does expire.

Similarly, the CBD itself doesn’t expire, but it can degrade over time with exposure to heat, light, and oxygen. Some CBD tinctures will expire faster than others, depending on the ingredients used.

CBD oils usually last around 1-3 years if stored in proper conditions. See below for indicators that your CBD oil has expired:

  • The oil is less transparent and has become darker and thicker
  • It tastes like it’s gone bad
  • It smells off

Even if your product is before its expiration date, storing it near heat, sunlight, and moisture can make it go bad. See below for more information about expired CBD oil and how to store it for maximum shelf life.

How To Store CBD Oil

Keep in mind that storing your CBD oil near heat, moisture, and sunlight will make it degrade faster. So, the best way to store CBD oil is by doing the opposite, keeping your tincture in a cool, dry, and dark place.

Here are some places to avoid storing your CBD oil:

  • On a window sill
  • On a bathroom counter where moisture builds up
  • Near heated/ventilated machines (air fryers, microwaves, etc.)
  • In the car (in heat or extreme heat)
  • Anywhere sunlight can reach

Here’s where you should store CBD oil:

  • In a bedroom/bathroom drawer
  • Makeup bag, travel bag, purse, backpack, etc.
  • Closet

Is Expired CBD Oil Harmful?

Most ingredients in CBD oil are safe to ingest even past the expiration date. However, if your oil smells and/or tastes rancid, it’s best not to consume it at all.

The main concern with expired CBD oil is that it loses potency, and the CBD degrades and loses its effectiveness. Expired CBD won’t make you sick, but ingesting it is pretty useless, considering it won’t produce your desired effects. In fact, it won’t produce any effects at all.
