Best Temperatures To Vape Weed

Adjust the heat, and transform your vaping treat.

Ever tweaked the heat settings on your vape and noticed your high soared?

Increasing the temperature of your weed vape can intensify the effects of THC since heat helps activate cannabinoids. This doesn’t mean you should run to your vape pen and crank the heat to the highest setting. Very high temperatures could actually damage your beloved concentrate.

This article helps you understand how vapes work and why nudging their temperature settings can change the effects you experience.

How Does Vaporization Work?

Cannabis vapes work by heating cannabis material, like concentrate, to high temperatures that allow cannabinoids like THC or CBD to transition from a solid or liquid state into vapor.

Vaporization in weed vapes does not involve combustion like smoking does.

There are two main ways vapes are heated:

  1. Conduction heating — Heat is directly transferred to cannabis concentrates by placing the material on or near a hot surface.

  2. Convection heating — Heat is indirectly transferred to cannabis concentrates by circulating hot air through the chamber where the material is held.

How Does Temperature Affect Vaping

Weed vape cartridges, filled with distillates, CO2 oils, or live resins, contain high levels of cannabinoids like THC and CBD, which need heat to activate.

The right temperature will vaporize these cannabinoids and other compounds inside the plant, essentially unleashing their effects.

Now, let’s understand how you can adjust and tailor the temperature to the type of high you want.

Best Temp To Vape Weed: Weed Vape Temps You Can Choose

Generally, the hotter your cannabis vape heats what’s inside, the stronger the effects will be, although there’s definitely a threshold that runs the risk of ruining your product.

The best temperature to vape weed your is typically around 370°F to 445°F.

Here’s a guide to understanding different weed vape temp ranges:

Below 315°F (157°C): This temperature is too low to effectively vaporize your cannabis product. Effects will be weak or non-existent.

Moderate Temperatures (315°F to 370°F): This range is best for those wanting a milder high with enhanced flavor. THC and terpenes (aromatic compounds that give cannabis its flavor and contribute to its effects) can be released easily.

Higher Temperatures (370°F to 445°F): These temperatures can better activate THC, translating to a stronger mind and body high. Flavors might not be as full here since terpenes can degrade at higher temperatures, and the hot vapor can be harsh and irritating to your throat and lungs.

Above 445°F: Once your vape hits temperatures above 445°F, cannabis materials can combust and burn, which will then produce smoke rather than vapor. The smoke is extremely harsh, and cannabinoids like THC or CBD lose their potency. Terpenes will likely be completely burnt off.

Boiling Points of Common Cannabinoids and Terpenes

The tricky part about choosing a temperature to vape at is that cannabinoids and terpenes have different boiling points.

If the product inside your vape is rich in THCV, heating at 428°F would help activate the compound, but it would also mean that terpenes like pinene, which have a boiling point of 312.8°F, would likely burn off.

Here are the boiling points of some common cannabis compounds for reference:

  • THC: 314.6°F
  • THC-A: 220°F
  • CBD: 320°F
  • CBD-A: 240°F
  • CBN: 365°F
  • CBC 365°F
  • THCV: 428°F
  • Limonene: 350.6°F
  • B-caryophyllene: 246.2°F
  • Linalool: 388.4°F
  • Pinene: 312.8°F
  • Myrcene: 332.6°F

What Temperature Do Trichomes Melt

Trichomes, the resin glands of the cannabis plant that contain cannabinoids and terpenes, begin to melt at around 220 degrees Fahrenheit (104 degrees Celsius).

When heated to this temperature, the trichomes can release their potent active ingredients effectively without burning them, preserving the flavors and effects of the cannabinoids and terpenes.
