Study Says More Software Programmers Are Using Cannabis Than Ever Before

The outlook you have on a stressful remote job might change with a little green.

The pandemic caused the swift uprise of remote work, and while many enjoy working from home and not suiting up for a long day at the office, others find it stressful, lonely, and dull. The downsides of remote work are often amplified in jobs that are a bit more monotonous, like software programming.

A new study conducted by a research team at the University of Michigan pointed out that over one-third of software programmers choose to use cannabis in some form when on the clock remotely. We truly give props to the software developers and programmers out there who work long and lonely hours, especially in a job that can be rather tedious and get very boring very fast.

A few at-home tools at their disposable can help make the job a little more enjoyable, and the new study mentioned that 61% of participants said they use cannabis when working remotely because it makes the job more fun.

In addition, most cannabis strains are known to up one’s creative abilities and spark new methods for problem-solving. Software programmers are often faced with challenges that require some critical thinking when navigating an issue. For this reason, programmers might make good use of cannabis when on the job, searching for solutions that their sober brain couldn’t think of.

The study added that more than 50% of software programmers use cannabis to support and promote creative thinking and problem-solving. LA Weekly made an interesting point, adding that cannabis might have played a key role in creating some of our favorite websites or apps.

Finally, there’s one universally appreciated aspect of cannabis that anyone can take advantage of. Instead of feeding into the “lazy stoner” stereotype, many remote workers like software programmers choose to use cannabis to mitigate stress and increase relaxation.

It’s no secret that tedious jobs like programming come with heightened stress at some points, especially when navigating daily unforeseen challenges. The study wrote that a quarter of the participants use marijuana to decrease stress and enhance mental wellness.

Anxiety and stress and be detrimental to one’s job performance, regardless of the field. For this reason, and the ones stated above, cannabis use and remote work might take your career’s success to new heights.
