The Cannabis Industry Is Looking To Merge With Psychedelics

With all the news that psychedelics might be decriminalized sooner than later, cannabis companies hope to add psilocybin in their products.

Cannabis has created this sort of counterculture that’s just as welcoming as the psychedelic space. These two substances share a ton of similarities considering they’re both federally illegal and offer valuable medicinal properties for many conditions.

For these reasons, cannabis companies are beginning to prepare for if and when psychedelic substances are decriminalized by creating products that feature the healing benefits of psilocybin mushrooms.

First, let’s take a look at Australia, where the country’s first local medical cannabis grower, Little Green Pharma, is beginning to create ingestibles with psilocybin.

The company’s main activities consist of cultivating and producing medical marijuana since 2018, but now the Washington-based Australian company has received approval from the Washington Department of Health to begin creating products with psilocybin.

By having a Schedule 9 license, Little Green Pharma is now permitted to make concise medicines for varying conditions like PTSD and anxiety.

The company plans on growing its own psychedelic “magic mushrooms” in its facilities, which will extract the psilocybin to be used in the form of a capsule or pill. However, there still hasn’t been news on when these products might hit the Australian market.

But what about the United States? Well, some weed-friendly states like California should expect similar products on the market in the coming years.

One of California’s leading and largest cannabis companies, Cookies, is beginning to talk about incorporating psilocybin into its products.

According to Forbes, a spokesperson from Cookies mentioned their team has been “experimenting with plant medicine for years, and we see so much value in what mushrooms can do for consumer’s health and wellness, so it was only natural to go this route.”

All it’s waiting on is the green light from the state government that will hopefully decriminalize psilocybin and spur more companies to start using the substance. Once this happens, Cookies wants to incorporate the hallucinogen into its proprietary blends, reports WikiLeaf.

Currently, Cookies is taking advantage of legal, common mushrooms by incorporating the beneficial elements of the fungi into its blends. It also recently released a new line of Caps containing CBD and minor cannabinoids CBG and CBN. However, the capsules also use mushrooms like shiitake, reishi, lion’s mane, and cordyceps, sources say.

On Cookies’ website, the company notes that “ancient cultures have been harnessing the healing capabilities of mushrooms for generations,” making it all the more meaningful in modern medicine.

We have only “recently dipped into the deep well of organic remedies found in fungi,” and the company hopes to continue moving forward on this route to organic and natural plant-based medicines
