There's a whopping 24 dispensaries in town.
If there’s anything we appreciate, it’s a city that’s basically dedicated to getting its locals stoned. As a result, the state of Michigan has been a top contender for having some of the most dispensaries around the nation.
According to Michigan’s Marijuana Regulatory Agency, they’ve released a list from their database that highlights the cities in Michigan with the highest number of active cannabis dispensaries.
Ann Arbor has had a longstanding relationship with marijuana, so it’s no surprise that this city reigns supreme with the most active recreational cannabis and retail businesses in Michigan. Ann Arbor holds one of the oldest political rallies in the country. The Ann Arbor Hash Bash is an annual event and includes a variety of speeches, live music, street vending, and the occasional rule-bender or two.

The Ann Arbor Hash Bash first went down on April 1, 1972, on the grounds of the University of Michigan’s Diag. According to the University of Michigan’s events page, the event was set to celebrate the release of activist and culture figure John Sinclair, who was incarcerated with cannabis-related charges. So really, it’s no shocker that Ann Arbor’s dispensary count comes in at a whopping 24.
Catching up behind Ann Arbor is Bay City in Michigan; though it has a smaller population than Ann Arbor, it has almost the same number of dispensaries. Ann Arbor disperses its dispensaries within its population of more than 120,000; on the other hand, Bay City has 22 dispensaries for roughly 33,000 people.
According to WFRG News, that’s about one store for every 1,500 people in Bay City, so we assume those residents might be some of the happiest, relaxed, and lifted locals in the country.

Cities at the bottom seem to be coming in last for the number of cannabis stores. However, the city of Kalkaska reigns supreme when strictly looking at cannabis dispensaries per capita. Since the village has a small population of 2,076 and has six cannabis stores, that’s roughly one dispensary for 346 people. So it’s only fair to say that Michigan is doing a bang-up job of keeping its residents chilled out.
