It’s understandable why Oprah might like a toke or two from time to time. Even after her monumentally successful show ended in 2011, the former television host and philanthropist has remained consistently busy.
According to her longtime best friend and business partner Gayle King, when Oprah’s not on the clock, though, she has casually used cannabis.
The topic came up recently when King appeared on Ellen Degeneres’ talk show Ellen. They were discussing Degeneres’ famous 60th birthday bash, which featured an elite roster of guests, including Kanye West, John Legend, Kim Kardashian, and Amy Schumer, to name a few.
“There may have been some marijuana being smoked around the place,” Degeneres said, providing context to what she told King next, “Amy Schumer is set on smoking pot with you.”
King responded by saying she has never smoked a “marijuana cigarette” and confessed that she was a “total square.” Still, King said that she would try it with Schumer—but in private.
“Oprah has also smoked a little marijuana too, I don’t mind saying that,” said King. Degeneres then asked King whether Oprah enjoys weed, but King refused to answer the question.
It seems as if King accidentally let the information about her BFF slip as she abruptly changed the subject. They pivoted to discussing cannabis, more generally, and how they both feel about the subject.
“I prefer to be high on life,” said King to the Ellen live studio, ostensibly made up of concerned mothers who applauded and cheered.
Interestingly, Vulture points out that in 2015, Oprah told David Letterman during his show’s series finale that she hasn’t smoked weed in thirty years.
Back in 2013, Oprah said the same thing to Andy Cohen on his show Watch What Happens Live, in which she cites the same amount of years since using cannabis. It seems, for now, we’ll have to just surmise whether Oprah loves the herb as much as we love her.
