Don’t knock it until you try it. Many reports claim that cannabis-infused lubricant can heighten the sexual experience and send your nether regions a-tingling. One woman has even claimed that a cannabis lubricant she purchased gave her a 15-minute orgasm.

There may be some science behind it as well. According to Lena Davidson of Washington’s BOND Sensual Oil, a cannabis-infused pre-sex massage oil, the active components in cannabis are potent vasodilators, causing blood to course through the genitals when applied topically. She tells The Stranger,

Functionally, the THC dilates the capillaries and increases blood flow in the smallest blood vessels in our body – this enhanced microcirculation magnifies sensitivity and sensation.

The one con? Cannabis needs to be infused into fat to be delivered to the skin. This means that using an oil is necessary, which can be difficult on certain types of condoms.

Oil is thought to weaken the latex, which can cause condoms to break. When using a latex condom, it’s recommended to use a water-based lubricant. Cannabis may best be saved for the foreplay.

Though, partners can certainly apply the lube at least 30 minutes prior to sex. Or, long enough for the oils to absorb. Some may find following up water-based lube or aloe vera gel beneficial when using a condom.

No one is happy when things go wrong with their genitals. Natural oils are gentle, nourishing and safe to use for both men and women. Some commercial lubes can promote infection, cause dryness, or simply aren’t the right texture for ultimate pleasure. Natural oils make for excellent household, DIY alternatives that you can formulate for your specific needs.

Some of the best natural oils include:

  • Coconut oil
  • Sweet almond oil
  • Olive oil
  • Grapeseed oil
  • Flaxseed oil

Coconut oil

Cannabis-infused coconut oil makes for the simplest lube ever. Coconut oil is a thick, substantive oil that starts off greasy but absorbs well. Coconut oil also contains lauric acid, which is a natural antimicrobial that may help prevent infections. For best results, use 100% pure coconut oil. This oil can have a sweet taste.

Aloe vera gel is a skin care essential that makes for a slippery, though bad tasting, lubricant. Aloe vera gel is a great option for women and men. Aloe vera gel works well with condoms, as it is a natural water-based lubricant.

Oil-based lubricants are thought to weaken condoms. It is also very gentle and soothing, which is great for multiple skin types.

When looking for aloe vera gel for lube, make sure it is food-grade and 100% pure. It is not recommended to use aloe products containing sugars as that may promote infection. Aloe vera gel also contains natural latex and should be avoided by those with a latex allergy.

When it comes to lube, everyone has their own needs and preferences. Here are three basic cannabis-infused lubes to test out. If they aren’t exactly what you’re looking for, changing the ratios of oils will alter the consistency and texture in each recipe.

Slippery lube

Base: almond oil, aloe vera gel

Blend together:

  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces) cannabis-infused sweet almond oil
  • 1/4 cup (2 ounces) 100% pure aloe vera gel
  • 10 drops vitamin E oil

Blend in high power blender or food processor until completely mixed together. Sometimes it is difficult to get oils and aloe gel to sufficiently combine. Store in size appropriate glass container, spray bottle, or anything of your choosing. Shake before using. Will keep for an estimated one month outside of the fridge, three months in the fridge.

Substitute almond oil for cannabis-infused olive, flax, or grapeseed oil for a slightly thicker lube. Coconut oil will make the thickest lube.

Edible option: For an edible and tasty lubricant, aloe vera gel can be swapped out for 1/8 cup (1 ounce) vegetable glycerine. Aloe vera tastes awful. However, vegetable glycerine may make lady partners more likely to develop a yeast infection. Citric acid can be added as a preservative.

Additional options

Depending on your skin type, there are all kinds of things you can put in lube. You can throw together an infused-lube from a wide variety natural products.

To increase the thickness of the lube, you can add thickeners like xanthan gum, corn starch, and sunflower lecithin. These products will give your lube a syrup quality.

Those looking for some heat or tingling sensation can try adding black pepper essential oil or peppermint oil, though this can be risky. These oils are abrasive and irritating to mucous membranes, like those that make up the mouth and the vagina.

Those willing to experiment with oils should test a small batch on the inside of the elbow or another sensitive area before putting it directly on the genitals. For something more calming, try a chamomile extract.

Remember: a little goes a long way.
