Lean, known colloquially as syrup, dirty sprite, or purple drank, is cough syrup containing Promethazine and Codeine.
Rapper Smokepurpp is yet another genre icon to express interest in a cannabis-related venture. But this time around, the Floridian artist finds his ambitions in a unique area of the cannabis industry.
The 22-year-old rapper shared the plans to launch a lifestyle brand called Purppavis via a now-deleted Instagram post last November. Sources say he detailed that the brand includes a THC lean line. THC lean serves as an alternative for the addictive concoction known as lean. The elixir aims to help those struggling with codeine addiction.
Since the syrup is solely cannabis-based, it has the potential to help those in the grips of the harmful substance wean themselves off of it. Smokepurpp is one of those people.
“My goal is to make Purppavis a lifestyle brand for marijuana lovers,” he said in the obsolete Instagram post. “THC lean is the first product because I wanted to create a positive alternative to actual lean. I know it ain’t healthy and I wanna use my platform to make a difference for myself and my supporters.”
The line of THC lean products will be dropping at some point this year. It’s slated to offer several flavors, like green apple, pineapple, watermelon, and strawberry.
Lean is usually served chilled in a doubled-styrofoam cup and mixed with a fruity soft drink. Some choose to add Jolly Ranchers or Skittles to enhance beverage sweetness. The codeine drink’s origins trace back to Houston, Texas, dating back the 1960s. Blues musicians used to cut it with beer for that extra oomph. Since then, the drink has become a staple of Southern hip-hop culture. However, lean can be incredibly addictive. Its abuse has resulted in complications leading to the deaths of several rap pioneers.
