You may have seen pics of Rihanna smoking weed. But does she still light up with the green herb?
Rihanna is one of the most popular artists worldwide. Her iconic 2023 Super Bowl Halftime performance was one for the books, which revealed her second pregnancy with rapper and hip-hop artist A$AP Rocky.
While Rihanna remains at the top of the music industry, she’s also dominating the makeup world with her brand Fenty Beauty. With so much success comes a lot of stress, and until 2016, Rihanna would look to cannabis to help her calm down and vibe out.
Although she’s not sparking up any longer, RiRi has had her fair share of stoner-friendly experiences. From being kicked out of hotels after tipping the smoke alarm to rolling blunts on a bodyguard’s bald head, Rihanna has blessed the cannabis community with quite a few memorable stories.
Read below as we take a trip down memory lane and remember Rihanna’s love affair with weed.
Born Robyn Rihanna Fenty, Rihanna
She ended up signing with Def Jam Records in 2005, leading to the release of her debut album, Music of the Sun, and its follow-up record, A Girl Like Me (2006). Since then, Rihanna has dropped eight studio albums, even though the last record we received from the star was way back in 2016, dubbed Anti.
Her music combines pop, R&B, and reggae, and her songs have been recognized for their catchy hooks, strong beats, and alluring vocals. Music career aside, Rihanna has made waves in the makeup community with her brand Fenty Beauty, not to mention the sexy line of lingerie with Savage X Fenty.
Rihanna has sold over 250 million records worldwide, making her one of the most popular and best-selling artists on the planet. With a handful of awards and nominations under her belt, like 9 Grammys, 13 Billboard Music Awards, and 8 American Music Awards, it’s safe to say that Rihanna has dominated the music industry for years. Her sidekick? A little weed, of course.
Until 2016, Rihanna was a proud cannabis user. The public isn’t so sure if Rihanna still indulges in the green or not, especially since having a baby with rapper and hip-hop artist A$AP Rocky. Plus, baby #2 is on the way, so perhaps RiRi has put down the joints…for now, at least.
For the sake of the community, let’s take a trip down memory lane. Back in 2010, Rihanna made headlines when she was kicked out of a hotel in Barbados for smoking weed and setting off the fire alarm. Reports of the incident said she was just trying out some of the herb in her home country, and rightly so. However, she was banned from ever returning to that hotel.
2011 is when the world really got to know Rihanna’s love for weed. It started with her bold and risky fashion statements, which comprised mesh shirts with marijuana leaf emblems and renditions of the American flag with weed leaves to replace the stars.
A few months later, Rihanna released the classic, and critically acclaimed album Talk That Talk, which featured RiRi in black and white with a big ol’ weed cloud leaving her lips. In one of the music videos for the album, more specifically, for “We Found Love,” the artist was seen smoking alongside a Chris Brown lookalike.
But the real stoner-friendly move that had the cannabis community in a chokehold was when Rihanna hilariously rolled a blunt on her bodyguard’s bald head at Coachella 2012. After which, she tweeted, “I’m crazy, and I don’t pretend to be anything else.”
In 2014, Rihanna started cutting back on her cannabis use. Still, that didn’t stop her from celebrating 420 that year while wearing a marijuana-themed bathing suit on her way to a beach outing with friends. The strategically placed marijuana leaves on that see-through bathing suit left little room for imagination.
In 2015, there was a rumor spreading that Rihanna was looking to launch her own line of cannabis products dubbed MaRihanna. However, her reps confirmed that the rumor was false. This was around the same time that Rihanna had confessed to trying to quit weed.
During a concert at the Palace of Auburn Hills in Detroit, the singer noticed a certain aroma in the air. “I gotta say one thing: I smell some weed!”
She later confessed, “I’ve been trying to be a good girl though, I try not to smoke.” When disappointed fans had a big reaction, she replied, “I know… I’m corny, I’m boring!”
It looks as though RiRi may be slowing down her personal marijuana use, especially with baby #2 on the way with A$AP Rocky. He’s also quite outspoken about his past love for cannabis and psychedelics, but that’s a story for another time.
