Matthew McConaughey tells Jimmy Kimmel about getting “snooped.”
While filming the upcoming comedy The Beach Bum, Matthew McConaughey says he got duped into smoking weed by none other than trickster and co-star, Snoop Dogg.
McConaughey shared the details on Jimmy Kimmel Live! about getting ‘snooped’ while the two worked on their first feature film together.
“My particular ‘snooping’ was all recorded on camera,” McConaughey said, “and I’m not quite sure what we did that night.”
Apparently, Snoop Dogg replaced what was supposed to be prop weed for real weed.
“My ‘snooping’ happened in this scene where I’m going to Snoop, and I have writer’s block, and Snoop has the magic weed. I go to Snoop, and I go to the prop-man and make sure I have prop weed. Prop weed is not real weed, it’s just crushed oregano and stuff.”
“We get in the six-minute scene, pass [the joint] back and forth, all of a sudden he goes ‘Yo, Moondog’ — that’s my character’s name — ‘that ain’t prop weed, that’s Snoop weed!’
“The next nine hours were a lot of fun, but I don’t believe we spoke a single word in the English language,” joked McConaughey.
There currently isn’t much information about The Beach Bum’s plot or narrative, however, the film’s trailer has Big Lebowski and Inherent Vice vibes, showing a hedonistic bohemian poet named Moondog bumming around beaches in Key West, Florida. It appears that Snoop Dogg plays his good friend and weed dealer.
The film is the creation of director and writer Harmony Korine, the complex mind behind films like Spring Breakers and Gummo.
Korine and Snoop seem to have known each other for quite some time. In 1997, Korine, then a teenager, appeared on David Letterman where he explained a project he had in mind involving Snoop Dogg and the novel Ulysses by James Joyce.
Along with McConaughey and Snoop, The Beach Bum co-stars Jimmy Buffett, Martin Lawrence, Jonah Hill, Isla Fisher, and Zac Efron, and is due for release on March 22, 2019.
