The boys from HashbarTV are at it again with huge slabs of shatter, foot long dabs and live resin hash oil, showing us the finest sticky on offer. There is also a bit of advice mixed in on picking out live resin hash oil.
This video dives right in, so we are going to do the same thing.
Dabs is handing a nice slab of sour jack shatter (all sativa). He describes it as “super terpy” and tasting like mango. The terpy reference, of course, refers to terpene (the pungent oils that give cannabis varieties with distinctive flavors). There are two varieties monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Monoterpenes are light terpenes. These aromatic compounds are responsible for the lighter, floral aromas of the cannabis scent. Sesquiterpenes, the heaviest terpenes, are responsible for the heavier undertones of the cannabis scent; think pepper, oregano, hops,
There are two varieties monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes. Monoterpenes are light terpenes. These aromatic compounds are responsible for the lighter, floral aromas of the cannabis scent. Sesquiterpenes, the heaviest terpenes, are responsible for the heavier undertones of the cannabis scent; think pepper, oregano, hops, mangoes. So we can assume Dabs has used a sesquiterpene on this large shatter.
Some of the best dabs (not the guy) around today are what’s called live resin. While it’s still BHO (butane hash oil) the main difference and key to its flavor is the starting material: live resin uses fresh, frozen whole cannabis flowers as opposed to buds that have been dried and cured. Extracting the oil from fresh plants captures a unique aroma that gets lost in the curing process. But in this case, they have cryogenically frozen their buds before extraction, which will have more terpenes than an average shatter.
Live resin contains a higher concentration of terpenes which are liquid so a live resin will have more of a sappy/liquidy consistency compared to a shatter. So Gii advises if you go to the dispensary and they take the slab off the paper there is a strong likelihood that it’s not live resin. Live resin also has a cleaner high with a lot more flavor due to the high terpene content; for that reason is going to cost more money for it as well. Just like everything else you pay for quality.
Advancements in extraction technology have enabled the use of other solvents like carbon dioxide and pure hydrocarbons in a process that utilizes pressure in a safe closed-loop system. The end product is a highly potent oil of varying consistencies most popularly used for vaporization and dabbing. So as Dabs adequately explains “closed -loop distils butane and thus takes out all the mystery oils that industrial butanes will contain”
There are a lot of ways to enjoy dabs, this hopefully helps you figure out which way you like to enjoy yours.
