Most of these celebrity parents who smoke weed have publicly said they would rather their kids toke than drink.
Despite that lingering stigma of who does and does not use cannabis, there are some cannabis icons and celebrities alike who have been killing it as parents while still managing to enjoy themselves, and a little bit of herb, in the process. Here’s to five celebrity parents who smoke weed.
Kristen Bell sparked some controversy recently when she admitted to being a marijuana smoking mommy in an interview with Marc Maron for his podcast WTF.
But the internet wasn’t outraged about her smoking around her kids, which Bell has said she would never do, rather, the controversy boiled up around the fact that she smokes around her husband, Dax Shephard, who has been sober for 14 years.
“I like my vape pen quite a bit. I smoke around my husband and it doesn’t seem to bother him,” Bell told Maron. “Weed rules. Weed is my drug of choice, for sure.”
But despite the tweet rage she set off with her love of weed, Shephard came to her defense to show just how ridiculous the critics were being. “That would be like a diabetic expecting their partner to never eat dessert. Get real!” he tweeted.
Wiz Khalifa is not only a cannabis legend, but he’s also a kick-ass father to his five-year-old son, Sebastian Taylor Thomaz. The hip-hop artist has been asked several questions over the years about both weed and fatherhood, but in a 2013 interview with Street Sweeper Radio, the two topics came together when he spoke about how he would smoke weed with his son but only once he’s old enough, and only if Sebastian really wanted to.
“I’m not planning on doing it while he’s a baby,” he said, “I put out a picture of him in some weed socks and people started tripping, like I’ma be smoking weed with him, but if my son reps hot, it’s all good. He’s not gonna smoke if he makes those decisions himself, but weed’s not that bad so it’s all good…it helps more than it hurts. I’d rather him be smoking weed than drinking alcohol.”
And if there’s any doubt Wiz is a great dad, here’s some wholesome goodness from Sabastian’s first day of school.
There is no greater legend in the cannabis world than Snoop. Except maybe Cheech and Chong and Willie Nelson, but Snoop Dogg has definitely earned his place among the pantheon. He’s also a father of four and he’s been quite vocal about how he feels when it comes to cannabis and parenting.
In 2012, Snoop spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about a photo that was posted to Twitter of him and his son posing next to a giant bong.
“My kids can do whatever the hell they want,” Snoop said when asked about the photo. “For me to say otherwise would be hypocritical. A lot of motherfuckers don’t have a relationship with their kids, and that’s when they get on drugs and have suicidal thoughts and drive drunk. Me and my son is mellow. I’m his father, so I wanna show him the proper way because he looks up to me. What better way to get it than from the master?”
Susan Sarandon has been a cannabis enthusiast since the 60s and her love for the herb has not waned since. Though she told High Times in 2015 that she took a short break when her kids were born, she also considers it a lifelong companion, saying:
“It’s something that I’ve always had around, and I’ve always been with people who smoked. But I went on a major hiatus when my kids were young. If I did smoke, I’d have to really find a time when I could—just for me. It’s never fun being high when you have to pretend you’re not.”
Now that her kids are grown up, she’s rediscovered the carefree high once again and she doesn’t mind if her kids partake as well. “I’ve said in print that I would rather have my kids smoking weed than drinking.”
Whoopi Goldberg is a newcomer to the cannabis community, but she’s just as enthusiastic about it as the rest of us, and she has her family to thank for that.
In fact, it was Whoopi’s daughter, Alex Martin, who introduced her to her vaping. In her first column for the Cannabist, she explains the story of how she kicked pills with the help of her daughter and the pen that she now vapes with.
She was first introduced to vaping for pain using a desktop vaporizer that she says she couldn’t even operate without her daughter around. That’s when Alex introduced her to portable vapes.
“I couldn’t be happier,” she writes, “because it‘s important for people to know that there are alternatives out there to pain management, and this one is particularly magical.”
