Finding a movie worth watching when high can be challenging, so we're here to help you out with a list of the best movies to watch when baked.
Watching movies is a pastime that pretty much everybody can enjoy. Whether it’s in the comfort of your own home or at a movie theater (when movie theaters were a possibility), watching a movie is FUN.
But it’s even more fun if you can smoke a little weed to get your creative juices flowing or help you giggle that much easier.
Whatever it is, watching a good movie stoned is great. the hard part is to find a movie that’s worth your time when you are high. So here’s a list of our top picks for this 420.
So here’s the thing, and I’ll be straight with you; Donnie Darko and one other entry in this list are films I have not seen. However, Donnie Darko is one I’ll be watching this 420.
The reason why it makes it onto this list is that any film buff that happens to be an enthusiast toker like us, says that you pretty much NEED to watch Donnie Darko when you’re high. I’ve even heard the phrase “I only understood Donnie Darko when I saw it high”.
A movie about a damaged teen (Jake Gyllenhaal) who gets followed around by a dark bunny rabbit that only he can see.
The Dude, his Dudeness, Duder, or El Duderino. A stoner classic that you need to watch if you haven’t. And if you have, you can just keep watching it over and over and over again.
The Big Lebowski is the story about a likable stoner with a White Russian addiction that goes around life not giving a fuck, really. Bowling, drinking, and smoking are pretty much everything the Dude cares about, and pretty much all you need in a classic stoner movie.
So, like any awesome nature documentary, Our Planet is narrated by the great David Attenborough.
A man who has experienced the living world first-hand in all of its variety and wonder. And although his voice is nothing but soothing, he is really able to transmit his love for nature and the passion he feels for the earth with it.
Our Planet is a film about the earth of ‘Earthers’, meaning you my friend. If you like nature documentaries, then this collaboration between David Attenborough and Netflix is a must-see. Our Planet was launched in 2020 when he was only 93 years old.
But Attenborough documentaries are not only about learning about the earth. He does a fantastic job of describing his ideas about the earth and what he has learned through his adventures about humans as a species.
FYI: David Attenborough is now 94 years old and is still doing it as if he was still in his 20s.
Alright, alright, alright.
This fantastic Mathew McConaughey is not only a McConaughey movie, it’s a Christopher Nolan film with a Hans Zimmer Soundtrack.
Nolan is a master at leaving us in awe of his visual effects and scenery, while Hans Zimmer is by far my favorite Film Soundtrack composer, and one whose style seems to pair perfectly with pretty much anything that Nolan does.
Not to mention that the story behind Interstellar is just incredibly fascinating, unique, and smart. Yup, I said smart. The film was acclaimed for its scientific accuracy, something that my friend the Theoretical physicist agreed with when I asked him about it.
You might know Duncan Trussell from his appearances on The Joe Rogan Experience.
But now you need to know him for his role in the genius Netflix series The Midnight Gospel.
Trussell and the creators of this fantastic series have found a way to innovate on the traditional podcast format and make it graphic through a series of psychedelic illustrations that tell the story of Clancy, the series main character.
Clancy (Duncan Trussell) has a simulator that stimulates different worlds. He visits each world to interview a different character each time. Each character is played by the episode’s guest and as the conversation between them develops, the cartoons play along to a storyline that somewhat relates to the conversation that is being held.
I started watching The Midnight Gospel thinking that it was going to be trippy, but it’s so much more than that. However, I do not recommend being super baked for this one as you will have some trouble following the conversation and the cartoons at the same time.
Simply Genius.
If you’re actually looking for something trippy, then The Twilight Zone is what you were looking for.
The Twilight Zone was a series originally launched in 1959 that ran for a total of 5 seasons. If you’ve ever watched Netflix’s Black Mirror, The Twilight Zone is like the ‘original Black Mirror’. A TV series with uniquely different episodes, each recounting a story that is always ‘out of this world’. Stories that are full of suspense, sci-fi, and mystery.
The original Twilight Zone is a great one to watch if you can get your hands on it, but I recently started watching the revamped version on Amazon Prime which is narrated by comedian Jordan Peele.
And I have to say it’s freaking awesome.
Airplane! is a classic comedy played by none other than the great Leslie Nielsen.
Although Leslie seems to take a secondary film in Airplane!, the film still has all the raw comedy traits that made his movies great. Airplane! was launched in 1980 when comedy hadn’t yet been sequestered by cancel culture, so you’ll see a lot of jokes in this film that today would be considered more than controversial but back then they were interpreted solely for what they were, JOKES.
The Matrix is one of the first action movies I remember watching as a child. Back then I only had a grasp on what the Matrix was trying to say. As I grew older and rewatched it several times I began to understand just how deep this film digs into the meaning of life.
But it was only around 5 months ago that I saw all 4 of the Matrix movies while high and finally understood the way this Wachowski film is meant to be watched.
The Matrix touches on serious subjects like the ‘meaning of life’, and I found that being high makes you just creative enough to fashion your own interpretations and see things that you might not have seen before.
This one is exactly what you’re picturing.
Various renowned anime directors partnered together to give the classic Batman character a Japanese twist. Batman visits feudal Japan and has to go through a series of missions before he can get back to modern Gotham.
While the screenplay and dialogue are not necessarily the best, it definitely makes the cut if you’re high. Plus, picture watching a fast-paced cartoon action film with Batman acting as a Samurai/Ninja.
I barely think that Rick & Morty need any introduction by now, but just in case.
Rick is a genius/crazy/drunk grandpa that decides to bond with his grandson after many years of being away. Morty is his ‘slow’, sort of geeky grandson who tags along to Rick’s adventures because he just doesn’t know how to say ‘no’.
The adventures of Rick & Morty are a collection of psychedelic drawings that will take you through an adventure across different universes where things tend to get a little bit quirky. The dialogue in this series is just fantastic and the comedy style behind it is unique. If you want to laugh, HARD, Rick & Morty is the way to go.
Three horny high schoolers are trying to look cool by purchasing the alcohol for a party that the girls they want to sleep with are throwing. Things seem to start off smoothly, but they soon go south and take us through a hilarious journey where they have to escape from cops, get into bar fights, and a lot more.
Superbad was co-written by Seth Rogen, who plays a policeman in the movie. When Rogen started writing the film he wrote the part of one of the main characters for himself, but by the time the writing was done Seth was too old. And this is how we came to see Jonah Hill play one of the main characters in a hit film for the first time.
If you haven’t seen this comedy classic, it’s time you got to it and there’s no better way to do so than high.
Eric Andre has quickly made a name for himself in the entertainment world. And while the Eric Andre style of comedy might make some people cringe, it’s also objectively hilarious.
Eric Andre and Lil Rel Howery play two friends that need to take a road trip so Andre’s character can gain the love of his high school crush. This road trip soon turns into a crazy adventure with hilarious unexpected turns.
But what makes this film genius is that it is filmed by playing pranks on unsuspecting civilians who don’t know they are being filmed. Bad Trip is difficult to explain, but I guarantee that you will laugh, especially if you’re high.
PS. I have only seen this movie high and was laughing crying, but I can’t say much for it if you watch it while sober.
Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle is the epitome of stoner movies.
Two roommates get baked in their apartment and decide to take a munchie excursion to White Castle, a regional hamburger restaurant known for providing square-shaped hamburger sliders. Which actually sounds like something you would crave when getting really high.
As you would expect, H & K are just too high to be out and about and end up making many stupid decisions and end up driven into unexpected adventures that will have you die laughing.
Seth Rogen, James Franco, and Danny McBride, need I say more?
Another classic stoner film that is not only about weed, but is also about the political atmosphere that has characterized weed and stalled the industry from developing. Pineapple Express is extremely funny and a must-watch for any Seth Rogen fan.
It feels easy to include another film based on a road trip, but this movie makes me laugh every single time I watch it. DJ Qualls, Tom Green at his prime, and Sean William Scott playing a role that fits him perfectly make this film one of the funniest comedy movies you can watch with friends.
Me and my buddies re-watched Road Trip one not long ago while getting baked and we laughed like it was the first time we watched it. This film doesn’t grow old but it still has that raw comedy feeling to it that you can find on movies filmed before cancel culture was a thing.
