"The drug war has been a horrendous instrument of prejudice and punishment for racial minorities," Maher explained.
During an episode of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the television host openly shared his view on cannabis legalization.
Well, he shared the views of Sen. Bernie Sanders, who promised to federally legalize cannabis on his first day in office.
Yesterday’s episode saw Maher discuss relevant issues like the recent overturn of Roe v. Wade. “If you’re keeping score at home, it’s guns one, women nothing,” he stated in his opening monologue.
While speaking with Andrew Sullivan and Katie Herzog, they discussed equity issues within the LGBTQ+ community. Once the episode was nearing the end, Maher hit us with the facts in his closing monologue.
He called out Sen. Bernie Sanders, agreeing with his desire to legalize cannabis. Sanders mentioned that legalizing weed was the first thing on his agenda if he were elected president in 2016.
Maher stated that he’s a firm believer in social equity. He discussed law reform in weed-friendly states and praised them for helping impacted communities and entrepreneurs enter the legal industry.
He closed the show with a compelling statement. “The drug war has been a horrendous instrument of prejudice and punishment for racial minorities.”
He added, “But it’s also what’s holding up Republican support from legalizing weed nationally, which would be good for everybody.”
“And these are the hard, practical choices the Democrats have to weigh: Redress the past or reach out to the gettable white voter who says, ‘You know what, I’d like a shot at getting in the pot business. But to do that, I’m going to need a good lawyer who fights for me.'”
This isn’t the first time Maher has talked about federal cannabis legalization. According to Benzinga, the television host spoke with Attorney General Eric Holder on the show earlier this month.
Maher asked a question that was submitted by the audience, “Why isn’t Biden pushing for federal legalization of marijuana?”
We’re not the only ones disappointed that Biden hasn’t kept his campaign promises about cannabis.
