We went through dozens of Reddit threads to find out where stoners say the best (and worst) flower comes from. Some answers are obvious. Others might surprise you.
The world’s best weed isn’t always where you’d expect it to be… and neither is the worst. Reddit’s cannabis communities have spent years debating which countries grow the best flower, which ones are coasting on reputation, and which ones you should absolutely avoid buying from if you’re traveling. We dug through the most active threads on r/trees, r/weed, r/Marijuana, and r/BloomAndChill to pull together the most consistent opinions on where the world’s best weed actually comes from.
Many of these Redditors have smoked their way across continents and have firsthand comparisons. That gives the world’s best weed consensus more weight than a random listicle. Here’s the global breakdown—the good, the bad, and the truly terrible.

If there’s one region that comes up over and over in threads about the world’s best weed, it’s Canada—and specifically British Columbia. BC flower has a reputation that extends well beyond Canada’s borders, and Redditors consistently back that up with firsthand experience.
Canada legalized recreational cannabis in 2018, and British Columbia had a decades-long head start thanks to its established craft growing culture. BC’s climate—mild coastal temperatures, clean water sources, and long growing seasons—creates ideal conditions for outdoor and greenhouse cultivation. Many BC growers use organic methods and small-batch processes that prioritize terpene preservation and cannabinoid development over sheer volume.
The Reddit consensus on Canada is about as unanimous as it gets. In a r/weed thread asking what country has the best weed, u/Bustamonte6 didn’t hesitate: “Canada by far, just spent 3 weeks in Amsterdam their pot is like homegrown shred.” u/AncientBlonde2 kept it even simpler—just “Canada.” In a separate r/trees thread, one deleted user laid out the case in detail: you can get ounces for $49–$99 CAD with access to AAA and AAAA quality bud at legal stores, and there are so many dispensaries in some towns that the competition alone drives quality up.
In a thread on r/TheBCCS, u/Big_Mc10k shared that a German friend who lived in Amsterdam for years, with no problem spending top dollar on flower, said that 90% of the best flower he encountered in Amsterdam came from BC. That’s pretty telling.
u/Lannet1 echoed the sentiment in a weed quality while traveling thread: “Canada had the highest quality weed I’ve experienced. Special shout-out to Houseplant I purchased there.” (Houseplant was co-founded by Seth Rogen, for context). And u/IAmFern on r/Marijuana pointed out something no U.S. smoker can claim yet: “I can fly within my own country and legally take weed with me on a plane.”
BC bud is sometimes referred to as “Canadian loud” in online communities, and it’s earned that label. The craft grower scene in particular produces some of the best-looking weed in the world: dense, frosty, vibrant buds with terpene profiles that smell like they were engineered rather than grown. When Redditors debate what country has the best weed, BC is almost always the first answer.

Jamaica’s place in cannabis culture is iconic, but the world’s best weed conversation around Jamaica is more nuanced than “Bob Marley’s homeland.” Redditors who’ve actually visited and smoked there point to a specific experience that’s hard to replicate anywhere else—earthy, authentic strains grown outdoors without chemical intervention.
What makes Jamaican cannabis unique is the prevalence of landrace genetics—strains that have adapted to the island’s tropical climate over generations without heavy hybridization. These plants grow naturally in Jamaica’s volcanic, mineral-rich soil at elevations that promote strong UV exposure, which helps drive trichome production. The result is flower with an earthy, authentic flavor profile that modern indoor hybrids often lack.
While Reddit mentions of Jamaica having the best weed in the world were few and far between, it’s simply not right to leave out the land that honors cannabis the most. The best quality weed in the world might not live exclusively on this island, but what Jamaica offers is a purity of experience: organic outdoor flower grown in the tradition that helped define cannabis culture globally. If you’re chasing the world’s best weed from a heritage and terroir perspective, Jamaica belongs on the shortlist.

Afghanistan might not be the first country that comes to mind when casual smokers discuss the world’s best weed, but Redditors with deeper cannabis knowledge consistently flag it as a hidden powerhouse, particularly for hash and indica genetics.
Afghanistan is the ancestral home of some of the most influential indica genetics in modern cannabis breeding. Strains like Afghani have been crossed into hundreds of popular hybrids worldwide—OG Kush, Northern Lights, and Hindu Kush all trace their lineage back to Afghan genetics. The country’s mountainous terrain, high elevation, and intense sunlight create optimal conditions for resinous, trichome-dense plants. The world’s best weed in terms of raw resin production arguably starts here.
Again, Redditors weren’t quick to mention Afghanistan. But the fact that most of our favorite strains all link back to one country, it goes without saying—Afghanistan absolutely knows its way around good weed. The country’s hash-making tradition, which predates modern cannabis culture by centuries, reflects generations of knowledge about cultivating for maximum potency and extraction quality. While access is obviously complicated, the genetic legacy speaks for itself.

No list about the world’s best weed would be complete without the United States, and three states dominate the Reddit conversation: California, Arizona, and Michigan. California’s position as the world’s best weed pioneer is well documented, but Arizona and Michigan have been gaining serious ground in recent years.
u/Fedupreddit on r/weed gave arguably the most well-traveled take in any of these threads: “Southern California. I’ve traveled to Amsterdam, Spain, Barcelona, Mexico, Costa Rica, France, Thailand, and Canada. I’ve gotten to try weed from all over the world… California has great bud from north to south.” u/MaybeACbeera on r/trees confirmed the international reputation: “Here in Aus, Cali weed is considered mythical.”
California’s Emerald Triangle has been producing some of the best quality weed in the world for decades, and the state’s legal market gives consumers access to an absurd variety of strains, extracts, and cultivators. Indoor growing technology in California is among the most advanced globally, and the craft scene. In particular, Humboldt and Mendocino counties produce flower that regularly wins Cannabis Cups.
But the Reddit surprise pick for the world’s best weed in America? Michigan. u/Regular-Amoeba5455 was blunt in the traveling thread: “Amsterdam sucked. Detroit is the best I’ve seen.” u/metta_world_frites backed that up: “Coming from the west coast, I was blown away by Detroit.” And u/Goldenage333 confirmed it as a local: “Michigan is top right now, I live there!” On r/Marijuana, u/Somnifor explained why: “Of the US states Michigan is the one that has done legalization best so far. It basically came out of nowhere to become the weed state for a large swathe of the US.” u/Useful_Amphibian_839 added that Michigan’s “advanced inside growing allows for high terpene and high quality weed” at prices that undercut California significantly.
Then there’s Arizona. u/PanhandlersPets shared a genuinely moving experience on r/BloomAndChill: “I went to Arizona from Texas and was so overwhelmed at the dispensary I almost cried. The accessibility and variety was amazing… for the first time I didn’t feel like a criminal for choosing weed instead of opiates for my pain management.”
When people ask what country has the best weed, the U.S. often wins on sheer variety and access alone. And if the Reddit consensus tells us anything, Michigan might be the most underrated “world’s best weed” contender on this list.

Thailand is the first Southeast Asian country to legalize recreational cannabis (in 2022, though regulations have since tightened), and Redditors who’ve visited during the legal window report a rapidly developing market with genuinely impressive flower.
Thailand has a long history of cannabis cultivation. Thai Stick was one of the most sought-after strains in the 1970s and 1980s, and legalization brought a wave of new growers and dispensaries. The tropical climate favors sativa-dominant landraces with energetic, cerebral effects, and many Thai growers are combining traditional outdoor methods with modern indoor techniques.
In a r/trees thread titled “Where has the BEST weed right now?”, OP u/GlazedGrappler set the tone: “I’ve been out in Bangkok talking to people from all over the world in the smoke lounges. Even pro growers from Colorado say Thailand has some of the best cannabis around. The average shop has stuff better than I’ve tried in Amsterdam and the UK.” u/Rantansplan explained part of why: “Thailand has KD, one of the most prolific breeders worldwide.” u/GlazedGrappler followed up: “KD fills a really special gap. His genetics has been around since the 60s and it smokes just like I’d imagine weed from the 60s would!”
For travelers looking for the world’s best weed in a Southeast Asian setting, Thailand offers an experience that didn’t exist even a few years ago. The combination of affordable pricing, cultural openness to cannabis, and improving genetics—driven by breeders like KD—makes it a destination worth watching. The world’s best weed conversation is evolving fast, and Thailand is earning its seat at the table.

South Africa is an under-the-radar entry in the world’s best weed discussion, but Redditors who’ve smoked there—or who’ve grown South African genetics—point to a unique landrace tradition that produces flower you won’t find anywhere else.
South Africa sits in a geographic sweet spot for cannabis cultivation. The country’s varying climates, from subtropical coastal regions to high-altitude inland areas, support diverse growing conditions that produce landraces with distinct characteristics. Durban Poison, arguably the most famous South African strain, is a pure sativa known for its sweet, anise-like flavor and energetic high. It’s become a foundational strain in global breeding programs.
u/Prudent_Squirrel_706 repped the continent hard in the traveling thread: “Ama say Africa has it all, mostly in Uganda, Kenya and Mozambique, Malawi and South Africa.” That tracks with what strain hunters and breeders have known for decades—East and Southern Africa contain some of the most genetically diverse cannabis landraces on Earth.
The best-looking weed in the world might come from indoor facilities elsewhere, but South African landraces offer a different kind of quality: genetic purity and terpene profiles shaped by specific regional microclimates over generations. For strain hunters and landrace enthusiasts, South Africa is a goldmine that produces some of the world’s best weed genetics, even if the market infrastructure hasn’t caught up yet.

Not every country grows fire bud. If the first half of this article covered the world’s best weed, this section covers the opposite: the places Redditors who’ve smoked there firsthand say you should avoid.

When Redditors discuss the world’s best weed, France doesn’t come up, but it does come up frequently when the topic turns to the worst.
Cannabis is illegal in France, which means supply is controlled entirely by the black market. That translates to low-quality imports (often mass-produced resin from North Africa) with no testing, no quality control, and no accountability. Redditors consistently describe French weed as harsh, chemically tasting, and poorly cured. u/Fedupreddit on r/weed listed France among the countries where they’d tried weed while traveling — and conspicuously had nothing positive to say about it, saving the praise for California, Thailand, and Canada instead.
Without a legal market to create competition, there’s no incentive for quality to improve. The lack of domestic cultivation means consumers get whatever makes it through the supply chain, and that’s about as far from the world’s best weed as you can get.

This one surprises people, but Redditors who’ve visited Amsterdam’s famous coffeeshops increasingly describe the world’s best weed reputation as overhyped and underwhelming. The world’s best weed used to live here. In 2026, the reputation is coasting… hard.
The Reddit backlash against Amsterdam is one of the strongest themes across every thread we reviewed. u/alien__0G put it plainly on r/trees: “Netherlands would’ve been the answer 20 years ago. But so many countries have improved its law since then while it seems Netherlands remained stagnant.” u/jorgschrauwen, seemingly Dutch, added: “I hate that this isn’t Netherlands. We used to be known as stoner country but our government doesn’t even legalize.” u/Carlin47, who moved from Canada to the Netherlands, called it “a downgrade indeed”—missing vape carts and the ability to buy in bulk.
The travel comparisons are even more damning. u/Bustamonte6 spent three weeks in Amsterdam and concluded their weed was “like homegrown shred” compared to Canada. u/Regular-Amoeba5455 was blunter: “Amsterdam sucked.” u/Goldenage333 elaborated: “A huge misconception about Amsterdam is that they have the best. I will say some is very good but I struggled to find anything comparable to California.” Even u/Fedupreddit, who praised Amsterdam’s Cheese strain from 20 years ago as “unbelievable,” implied those days are over, saving the real praise for California and Canada.
There are exceptions—some coffeeshops do stock quality flower—but the consensus is clear. Amsterdam’s “world’s best weed” reputation belongs to a different era. If you’re visiting specifically for cannabis, temper your expectations.

Costa Rica is a beautiful travel destination, but Redditors are blunt about the weed: it’s mostly bad.
u/Fedupreddit summed it up in two words on r/weed: “Costa Rica was boof.” The common complaints across Reddit threads are consistent—dry buds, tons of seeds, weak potency, and barely any flavor or smell. Because commercial cannabis sale is illegal, there’s no regulated market pushing quality upward. What you find through dealers is often poorly grown, improperly cured, and handled without any care for the end experience.
Redditors do note that rare gems exist among home growers who take their craft seriously, but finding them requires local connections and carries the risks that come with buying in a market where cannabis remains commercially illegal. For travelers expecting the world’s best weed in a tropical paradise, Costa Rica’s street supply will remind you that the world’s best weed requires infrastructure, competition, and legal markets to thrive. If you do find quality there, consider yourself lucky.

If there’s a consensus pick for the opposite of the world’s best weed, it’s Paraguay. The description that comes up repeatedly: toxic, low-quality buds that are more concerning than enjoyable.
The issues go beyond just potency or taste. Redditors, and a well-known Vice investigation into Paraguayan cannabis, describe a supply chain built on mass agricultural spraying with pesticides, sun-drying that degrades cannabinoids and terpenes, and machine-pressing with dirty, uncleaned equipment. The end product is compressed brick weed that’s been chemically treated, improperly dried, and mechanically processed in ways that prioritize volume over everything else. The Vice report found that bricks are often mixed with marmalade or soda knockoffs to help them stick together, causing bacteria and fungi to grow inside the compressed product.
Paraguay is a major cannabis exporter in South America, and the low price point reflects the low quality. Nobody looking for the world’s best weed is shopping here. The health risks from pesticide residue alone make Paraguayan cannabis one of the most concerning options globally.

Mexico sits in a gray area. Redditors acknowledge that quality cannabis exists in Mexico, but the experience for tourists (especially at beach resorts) is overwhelmingly negative.
The world’s best weed is not being sold on Mexican beaches. Redditors describe resort weed as seedy, stemmy, weak, harsh, and overpriced—product that’s sold to tourists who don’t have alternatives and won’t be returning to complain. Multiple users also raise safety concerns, including fake cops who extort buyers post-purchase and robbery setups during transactions with local dealers. Moldy flower is another repeated complaint.
That said, u/Fedupreddit offered a more balanced take on r/weed: “Mexico is like that old school Chronic.” So quality domestic flower exists, it’s just not making it to the resort vendor circuit. Mexico has a rich cannabis growing history and is home to landrace genetics that influenced global breeding. Until Mexico’s legal commercial market matures, though, the tourist experience will stay disappointing.
