Slightly Not Sober: A Little Buzz, a Bigger Conversation

More people want to feel a little something, not everything. Here's what the data says about the shift to slightly not sober, and how brands are starting to catch up.

Being slightly not sober is a feeling a lot of cannabis users know well, even if they’ve never called it that. It’s the single puff before a dinner party, not the whole joint. It’s the half gummy cut with a kitchen knife.

Nobody coined a movement for it. Plenty of people just arrived there on their own. Maybe they had one too many nights where a “standard” edible turned into a four-hour couch situation. Maybe they simply realized they needed something to take the edge off and nothing more. Either way, the goal shifted from getting as high as possible to feeling just right.

If that sounds familiar, it’s because the same impulse shows up somewhere else. California Sober is a movement that swaps alcohol and harder drugs for cannabis and sometimes psychedelics. The Sober Curious movement asks people to question the default drink in their hand and try alternatives to drinking instead. Neither is about giving up enjoyment. Both are about consuming with more intention.

Slightly not sober fits right alongside them. It’s not abstinence from cannabis. It’s a different relationship with it, one where less is often the point.

And some brands are paying attention. Modus Brand built an entire line of low dose THC gummies around this exact preference, which we’ll get to below. First, the numbers.

For decades, cannabis has been getting stronger. According to potency data from the National Institute on Drug Abuse, the average THC in cannabis samples seized by the DEA rose from 3.96% in 1995 to 16.14% in 2022. Those samples included flower, hashish, and hash oil. Over the same stretch, average CBD dipped, from 0.28% to 0.21%.

The weed of the mid-’90s averaged under 4% THC. By 2022, the average sample was 4x stronger, with slightly less CBD alongside it. So “just a little” means something very different now than it did 30 years ago.

But here’s where it gets interesting. While the market chased potency, most consumers were heading the other way.

According to New Frontier Data’s research led by Dr. Molly McCann, 61% of cannabis edible consumers take 10mg or less at a time. BDSA’s consumer insights found something similar. 42% of edible consumers in adult-use states prefer 10mg or less of THC per occasion, with doses often landing between 2.5mg and 5mg. Among beverage consumers, BDSA found that taste and flavor matter more than potency.

The industry spent years assuming people wanted the strongest product on the shelf. A big share of consumers actually wanted something more predictable, gentler, and more enjoyable. That’s why THC gummies low dose options (often in the 2.5mg to 5mg range) are getting more attention.

Brands are starting to shift with the trend. Some are responding with low dose THC gummies and smaller servings. Others are going further, rethinking not just how much THC goes into a gummy, but what goes in alongside it, and when you’d actually want to take it.

Modus is one of the brands we’ve noticed leaning into this. Its Slightly Not Sober (SNS) line keeps the THC low and consistent, then changes what goes alongside it. Every gummy starts with 3mg of hemp-derived delta-9 THC and 20mg of CBD, which puts these 3mg THC gummies right inside the 2.5mg to 5mg range BDSA found many edible consumers prefer.

From there, each formula adds supporting ingredients built around a different part of the day. The evening gummy adds KSM-66 ashwagandha and a little CBN. The focus gummy adds Alpha-GPC and tyrosine. The daytime gummy adds Panax ginseng and tyrosine. And L-theanine, an amino acid naturally found in tea, shows up in all three.

That’s a different pitch from the one most edibles have made for years. The THC number stays the same across the line. What changes is the moment each gummy is made for.

Some of those supporting ingredients have research behind them, though the evidence varies a lot:

Other ingredients are less settled:

It’s important to note that these studies tested each ingredient on its own, often at different doses, not these gummies or their combination with THC.

Here’s how the three low dose CBD THC gummies compare:

SNS Calm Gummies

  • Made for: “the end of the day, not the end of the night”
  • Cannabinoids: 3mg THC, 20mg CBD, and 2mg CBN per gummy
  • Supporting ingredients: KSM-66 ashwagandha, L-theanine, magnesium, and vitamin D3
  • Flavor: Boysenberry Splash

SNS Focus Gummies

  • Made for: “locking in” and getting things done
  • Cannabinoids: 3mg THC and 20mg CBD per gummy
  • Supporting ingredients: Alpha-GPC, rhodiola rosea, N-acetyl L-tyrosine, L-theanine, and vitamins B6 and B12
  • Flavor: Elderberry Smash

SNS Energy Gummies

  • Made for: “a subtle, functional experience you can build a day around”
  • Cannabinoids: 3mg THC and 20mg CBD per gummy
  • Supporting ingredients: L-tyrosine, L-theanine, Panax ginseng, magnesium, and vitamins B6 and B12

For decades, potency was the headline, and the numbers kept climbing. Meanwhile, a lot of people were quietly cutting gummies in half, keeping edibles to 10mg or less, and choosing flavor and predictability over strength. Products built around a low dose and a specific moment are a sign the market is finally catching up. Being slightly not sober was never about wanting less from cannabis. It’s about wanting the right amount, at the right time.

Important:  Laws vary by state. A narrower federal hemp definition takes effect in late 2026. Check current state and federal laws before buying.

Wanting to be slightly not sober is a sign that you’re developing a more intentional relationship with the plant. The data shows consumers are already there. Most edible users keep it at 10mg or under, and plenty prefer far less, even as average potency keeps climbing.

The products are starting to catch up. Modus’s SNS line is one example of what that looks like when a brand takes the shift seriously. They’re low dose CBD THC gummies built around how you want to feel, with supporting ingredients chosen on purpose. You can find all three low dose THC gummies online at Modus Brand.
