10 Places You Should Live If You Love Weed

Time to start packing.

Do you love weed so much that you would move to be around it? If so, you’re not alone.

While some decide to pack up and move for medical purposes, others do it to enjoy getting high in peace or making their lifelong dream of working with weed a reality.

Whatever the reason may be, there are a few places out there ready to welcome and accommodate potheads. From California to Uruguay, here are ten places you should live if you love weed.

Oregon

Oregon isn’t just an ideal place to live for the average cannabis user but also for individuals looking to experiment with psychedelics for guided therapy.

Oregon legalized medical marijuana in 1998 and recreational cannabis in 2014. As it stands, cannabis users over 21 can legally carry an ounce of weed in public with half a pound at home.

In terms of psychedelics, Oregon’s stance is far more liberal than most states. They allow the use of psilocybin mushrooms for guided therapy. Although laws are still changing, Oregon is an excellent state to reside for cannabis lovers.

California

Everywhere you look in The Golden State, you’ll find a dispensary or some sort of cannabis club. The state legalized recreational cannabis in 2016 and, impressively, was the first to legalize medical marijuana in 1996.

Ever wondered why Californians rave about their weed? The state is home to the Emerald Triangle, the largest cannabis-producing region in the country, located in NorCal.

Living here is notoriously expensive, so perhaps it’s best for temporary residents and digital nomads. Still, living in California is something every weed-lover should experience.

Colorado

From pot tours to weed yoga, Colorado has it all. Notably, Colorado became the first state to legalize recreational weed, doing so back in 2012.

In 2000, the state was the third to legalize medical marijuana, following Alaska. Colorado also happens to have the third most affordable ganja in the United States.

There are tons to do and see around Colorado, from catching a show at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheater to the stunning mountain views. Whatever you do, there’s sure to be a Colorado-grown strain for any occasion.

Washington State

Want to know where you can find the second cheapest pot in the US? If so, then look no further than Washington. Seattle, in particular, is always spitting out new strains.

You’ll never get bored of the same old weed, that’s for sure. And with the ocean coasts and rainforests surrounding you, finding a smoke spot with a beautiful view won’t be an issue.

Alaska

You won’t find a ton of dispensaries in Alaska. However, it is one of the few states to legalize pot for recreational use.

The state legalized medical cannabis in 1998, making it the second state to do so, following California’s bill in 1996. In 2014, Alaska legalized recreational cannabis.

Although dispensaries are scarce, here’s a list of cities you can find them:

  • Anchorage
  • Wasilla
  • Fairbanks
  • Valdez

Uruguay

In 2013, Uruguay made history and became the first nation to legalize the herb altogether. Here, medical marijuana and recreational cannabis are both federally legal.

It’s also one of the few places in the world where you are free to plunk your ass in the sand and light up some dank bud on the beach without any worries.

That said, there are some limits to where you can consume the herb, like near children-oriented spaces like schools, parks, daycares, etc. However, walk down the road for a few blocks, and you’ll almost always smell weed.

Spain

Spain’s cannabis scene is slightly similar to The Netherlands in that the country has various cannabis clubs where you can purchase the herb. However, you won’t be able to toke publically here.

Instead, you’re limited to inside the cannabis clubs or in your private residence. Regardless, living here is unmatched, especially for the cannabis user. Finding the herb isn’t hard to do, as it’s openly sold in various clubs in Barcelona and Grenada.

Canada

Oh, Canada, the true north, dank and free. Seriously, expect to smell weed around every block, especially in densely populated, weed-loving cities like Toronto and Vancouver.

In 2018, Canada became the second country worldwide to legalize recreational cannabis. While some cities have banned dispensaries (because their mayors aren’t into the idea), you’ll never be more than 20 minutes away from a dispensary.

People smoke it freely in the streets, on the beach, in their yards, and even in tucked-away corners of packed public places. Plus, British Columbia is known to grow some of the finest weed in the world.

The Netherlands

Whether it be some excellent hash or a space cake, you can have it all in the Netherlands, especially in Amsterdam, where you’ll find dozens of coffee shops that are licensed and ready to sell you some bud.

Did you know that cannabis isn’t legal in The Netherlands? Although Amsterdam is home to several coffee shops that sell cannabis, marijuana is only decriminalized here. Still, you shouldn’t get in trouble for using it, as long as you’re being responsible.

Fun fact: Amsterdam wants to ban tourists from coffee shops because of their irresponsible, loud, and obnoxious tourism. If you plan on moving here, don’t make a fool of yourself and use cannabis (and other substances) responsibly.

Portugal

We couldn’t leave out beautiful Portugal. The natural flora and fauna, stunning beaches, and historic cities will attract anyone, especially cannabis users.

Lighting up in Portugal is simple, considering the country decriminalized all drugs in 2001. However, it’s illegal to sell and purchase marijuana. That said, possession isn’t a crime, but there is a quantity limit that you cannot exceed within a 10-day period.

Living here is laidback. The friendly locals are quite welcoming to tourists and nomads. And although you’ll be using illicit weed, you won’t get in trouble for possessing it.
