Does anyone on this famous stoners list surprise you?
Over the years, weed has gone from counterculture to mainstream.
What was once a taboo underworld of “criminals”, “thugs”, and people existing on the fringe of society—is now a thriving world of medicine, recreation, business, education, and activism.
At the heart of all of these changes are celebrities who not only embraced the stoner title… They created it.
Though cannabis is just starting to make its way into the mainstream, many of us have been using the herb quietly for decades. Whether it’s for physical or mental health, recreation that steers away from alcohol, or to move away from heavy pharmaceuticals—having celebrities who are not quiet about their use and are functioning at a high level, has made it easier for the general public to see that being a stoner can come without the exaggerated stereotypes.
In 2025, cannabis is more than just a recreational activity for these well-known figures—it’s an integral part of their identities. From musicians to actors and activists, here’s a look at some of the most famous stoners of all time, including both classic icons and modern-day celebs.

Long before our society deemed cannabis use acceptable, famous stoners were the rebellious trailblazers who carved the path for modern cannabis culture as we know it today.
These icons used the herb for many reasons but were most loud about cannabis fueling their creativity and activism. Their legacy is forever tied to the early days of cannabis prohibition—challenging the stigma, shifting perspectives, and ultimately opening the minds of many.
Naturally at the very top of the list is one of the most well-known artists of any generation—the legendary Bob Marley. This reggae icon wasn’t just about the music—he was a staunch advocate for marijuana and its spiritual benefits. Marley’s connection to cannabis helped define the cultural significance of weed in the 1970s, and his legacy continues to inspire cannabis enthusiasts worldwide.
