Biodynamic Cannabis Cultivation: The Practice That Beats Organic Farming By A Mile

Biodynamic cannabis cultivation embraces biodiversity to grow the safest, richest, and most flavorful crops.

Different cannabis farms are finally beginning to make use of what’s called biodynamic farming in cannabis cultivation. According to the Biodynamic Association, the main characteristics of this farming approach are utilizing holistic, ecological, and ethical practices in gardening, food, and nutrition.

While this might seem like organic farming, biodynamics takes the ethos from organic practices and enhances it tenfold. Natural Cannabis Company states that Dr. Rudolf Steiner created the biodynamic movement back in the 1920s. Today, these farming approaches still focus on Dr. Steiner’s principles he designed a century ago.

What are the principles, you might ask? Natural Cannabis Company states these practices use a holistic approach to agriculture through gardens, farms, vineyards, orchards, and ranches. Biodynamic farming uses natural fertilizers and soil feeders to replace harmful chemical pesticides and other synthetic additives.

To implement proper biodynamic farming practices, farmers must ensure harmony between all elements used. This calls for planting and looking after trees and plants that are somewhat compatible, using natural pest control through wildlife and insects while also using them for pollination, having livestock to produce manure for crops, annual crop rotation cycles, and proper composting practices.

More often than not, biodynamic farms produce much more flavorful, rich, and potent cannabis strains. This is due to the land’s ample seed, flora, and fauna diversity. In order to make this a reality, biodynamic farms have several compatible plants, different livestock animals and complimentary insects, and heirloom or open-pollinated seeds, all of which work off of each other to produce such rich and flavorful plants.

To operate a farm of this nature, one must become biodynamic certified under The Demeter Biodynamic® Standard. So far, Natural Cannabis Company states that over 5,000 farms in 60 countries are officially biodynamic certified.

Biodynamic certification in the United States requires the following practices;

  • The entire farm must be biodynamic, not just a crop
  • Integrated crops and livestock
  • All animals are treated humanely
  • Biodynamic practices are implemented regularly
  • Withholding from excessive imported fertility
  • At least 50% of the livestock is grown on the farm
  • At least 10% of the farm’s land is solely dedicated to biodiversity
  • Farms must meet standards of social responsibility

We encourage you to look for cannabis companies that use biodynamic farming approaches in their cultivation practices. Why? Not only will you get your hands on the most flavorful and potent flower in the country, but you’re saving your body from ingesting chemical pesticides and other impurities from corporate farming routines. By supporting biodynamics, you’re supporting the earth, the animals, and you, the consumer.
