Though medical marijuana has been legal in Rhode Island since 2006, recreational marijuana only became legal for adults over the age of 21 this year.
Rhode Island is known for its abundance of natural beauty, from its stunning coastline to its lush forests. The state is also home to a number of historical and cultural attractions, making it a popular destination for visitors from all over the world.
Rhode Island’s capital city, Providence, is a major center for art and culture, and the state as a whole is known for its lively music and nightlife scene. Whether you’re looking to relax on the beach or explore some of the most unique attractions in the country, Rhode Island has something to offer everyone. And starting in 2022, that something even includes cannabis!
On May 26, 2022, Rhode Island Governor Dan McKee signed into law the bill commonly known as ” The Rhode Island Cannabis Act,” which immediately legalized the sale of cannabis products to adults over the age of 21 for recreational use.
With medical marijuana dispensaries already operating in the state, Rhode Island has the potential to quickly turn into a bustling hub of recreational cannabis. Yet, as everything is so new, it is unclear which dispensaries will add recreational cannabis to their menus, which will stay purely medical, and what new companies will emerge.
This uncertainty is only furthered by a curious quirk of Rhode Island law. While it is true that medical marijuana has been legal since 2006, there are currently only three dispensaries operating in the state.
Five additional dispensaries were granted medical marijuana licenses in late 2021, but those are not up and running yet, and it is unclear if they will. As such, we will now take a quick look at the three medical marijuana dispensaries operating in the state.
Located in Warwick, Rhode Island, Summit was founded in 2014 to provide top-quality care to those in need. They sell Edibles, concentrates, pre-rolls, vapes, and many different strains of flower, including Hybrid and Indica strains.
Completely devoted to serving its patients, Summit is known for its top-notch customer care. They are also unique in the fact that all their weed is grown locally in Rhode Island. Not to be confused with a stodgy medical company, Summit also makes sure to stay on top of all the latest technology.
They have their own app that allows patients and members to shop seamlessly. How cool is that!

Established in 2009, Greenleaf is one of the oldest dispensaries in Rhode Island and the whole east coast. Located in Portsmouth, Greenleaf is dedicated to making weed safe and accessible to the New England community.
They do this by only selling the highest quality products, whether that is a vape pen, a hybrid strain of flower, an oil tincture, or anything else. They pride themselves on having expert consultants who help each patient find the perfect weed for them.
To further make their customers’ lives easier, they offer a loyalty program and home delivery. Clearly, this is a place any patient possessing a medical marijuana card (and, hopefully, soon, recreational customers as well) should check out when in Rhode Island.

If you couldn’t tell from their name, the Thomas C. Slater Compassion Center cares about… well… compassion.
Devoted to providing the highest possible quality cannabis, ranging from flower to edibles to vapes and everything in between, whatever the Thomas C. Slater Compassion Center does start from a fundamental state of compassion.
They want to help those in pain who need all the benefits that weed provides, and they have built an entire dispensary just to do that. They even have reams of educational material and cannabis tips available on their website.
So even if you aren’t a customer planning on buying something from them, you will still leave their website or store more educated about cannabis, ready to, hopefully, live a healthier life. Located in the state capital of Providence, they are able to reach as many people as any dispensary in Rhode Island.
For some, compassion is just a buzzword. Not at this dispensary. If that sounds like a dispensary you want to check out, make sure to go on their website to see the full list of products and services they offer. And don’t forget to check them out if you are ever visiting or passing through Providence.
