THC drinks in Alabama are sold only by ABC Board-licensed retailers, in person. Online sales, direct delivery, drive-through sales, and direct shipment to Alabama residents are prohibited. Licensed retailers sell for off-premises consumption only and may not offer tastings.
Licensed retailer categories for THC beverages:
- Liquor stores. Eligible off-premise liquor licensees can add a consumable hemp license.
- Specialty hemp retailers. Dedicated hemp and CBD shops must obtain an ABC Board license and operate as 21+ establishments.
- Qualifying grocery stores. A retail food store qualifies if it dedicates at least 75% of its selling area and at least 14,000 square feet of its footprint to qualifying food items. Hemp beverages must be displayed in a separate, secured area.
- Specialty vape retailers. Since October 1, 2026, businesses holding a qualifying specialty electronic-nicotine retailer permit may also qualify for a consumable hemp retail license.
What about pharmacies?
Licensed pharmacies may sell qualifying topical and sublingual hemp products, but not THC beverages.
Examples of licensed retailers:
- Cottage Hill Package Store (Mobile). The City of Mobile approved consumable hemp license recommendations for Cottage Hill Package locations. The store has carried brands such as Brez, Cann, Louie Louie, and Melo.
- Magic City Organics (701 37th Street South, Birmingham). Describes itself as a licensed Birmingham hemp retailer with a selection of chilled THC and CBD beverages, sold in-store only.
- Piggly Wiggly. Local government records show Piggly Wiggly stores pursuing and receiving retail food store hemp licenses in 2026.
Licensed retailers are also found in Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery, and other Alabama cities. Use Herb’s dispensary directory to find retailers in your area.
How to verify a licensed retailer:
- Check the ABC Board list. The Alabama ABC Board maintains an active consumable hemp licensee list on its hemp licensing page.
- Look for a displayed license. Licensed retailers display their ABC Board consumable hemp license.
- Expect an ID check. Licensed retailers must verify that you are 21 or older.
